Yet ANOTHER Vaccination OOPSIE!

Well all you nay-sayers and name calling pro-vaccination-ers...here is yet ANOTHER HUGE OOPSIE about a vaccination that has been herald by all who care about not being FORCED to have to vaccinate their child against their wills because we just don't know what's in it, or what effect is will have down the road because it's untested and these issues aren't even known to the makers of it!
So...here goes.... WE TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Also, what this writer wants to know is...how many more of our children have to be harmed, maimed, killed or subjected to unknown or dangerous diseases BEFORE you pro-vaccinaters who call us who question and refuse vaccinations crazy and nut jobs {among other names} realize that our government, the BIG pharmas and our health system regular lie to us and are just using us as human guinea pigs for the almighty dollar, eh?)

CBS: Women Vaccinated with Gardasil More Likely to be Infected with High Risk Strain New Study Shows

by

Women who receive the Gardasil (HPV) vaccine may be more likely to be infected with the higher-risk strains of the virus than women who do not get the vaccine, according to a new study. Oh! but not to worry, you just have to get – (you guessed it) more shots and you’ll survive! (or so they hope)

On a trip to Southern California this weekend to speak in front of a bunch of Health Nuts (over 3,000 of them!)  only to find out the Gardasil conference was held at the same time at the same hotel (for Merck) I will not comment on the attitude or health of the Gardasil folks who attended the Gardasil Merck conference, but  it wasn’t pretty.

Now I get home from my second cross country flight in 3 days only to see what I missed in national news. That’s right, did you (or your daughter, niece etc) get vaccinated with the Gardasil vaccine? Well now they might be more likely to get those high risk strains (you know the dangerous ones that can kill) but all they have to do is come in and get another shot to fix it all up (sarcasm)  The stupidity here amazes me. No surprise Live Science doesn’t even mention that they can be more likely to get a high risk strain (which could lead to death) but instead Live Science puts in their headline that they need another shot. The arrogance of that headline kills me. Talk about an irresponsible headline. Then again Merck’s middle name might be irresponsible as one of the current heads of Merck used to be  to be head of the CDC! Talk about corruption! . Merck and the CDC are so dirty you don’t have to dig far to find the skeletons. Back to the CBS article though with a quote
Women who receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine may be more likely to be infected with certain high-risk strains of the virus than women who do not get the vaccine, according to a new study.
The findings suggest that, although the vaccine is effective in protecting against four strains of HPV, women who received it may still benefit from getting another, recently approved HPV vaccine that protects against nine strains of the virus, the researchers said.
Gee, that’s just what I want to hear after I get my child vaccinated with numerous Gardasil vaccines (which even CBS reported a Gardasil researcher warned can be hazardous for your health- turns out she was right!) and now get MORE shots?  They have gotten themselves in quite the clusterf*ck here. But as I see the “skeptics” (no we’re actually the real skeptics who are skeptical of this obvious dangerous vaccine…) as I see them posting in a rage about Chipolte Grill going GMO Free (great job Chipolte!)  These “skeptics” who push Monsanto and Gardasil on us and laugh at us for questioning GMOs are suddenly silent with no mention of this latest scandal with Gardasil. I’m sure they’ll continue to give their kids the Gardasil vaccine. Wait, will the current vaccine be updated since it can put girls at risk? I don’t even want to know. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to ever have this stuff injected in themselves.

I have a friends whose daughter was about to get married. She was in mid 20s and her doctor pushed the Gardasil shot harder than a crack dealer on them.  The daughter was already living with her fiance’ and did get married to him (they explained they are monogamous) so why would she need the vaccine?  The doctors are no better than the “Pusherman” described in Curtis’ Mayfield’s song from the Superfly soundtrack (which coincidentally came out the same year I was hospitalized and nearly died from vaccines as an infant.  You might think that’s a stretch there but doctors have been more “sick care” providers for some time just giving their “patients” the drug ads they see and crave on TV… the US is the only country (besides New Zealand) that even allows these pharmaceutical ads on the tely. I love how they say all the side effects at the end very quickly. As if they read them quickly enough they might not happen to you. Perhaps they should be forced to read them in slo mo or show a few folks in hospitals (or their gravestones) of those who did suffer those side effects- especially the Gardasil girls… What tragedy. If it weren’t so awful it would almost read like a comedy.  I hope this isn’t swept under the rug as it’s our future generations we’re talking about. Just do a search to see the headlines news articles of the countless girls who have died or were injured from Gardasil. Then you can decide what you want to do. For me the decision is easy.

Huffington Post Says "No" To Hillary Clinton Being President

As a Facebook friend, Chris Dixon says: "When you're a liberal and the HuffPo posts something like this, you  have a problem."

Hillary Clinton Seeks U.S. Presidency -- Three Reasons to Say 'No'

No better illustration exists of the dysfunctional nature of American politics than the phenomenon of Hillary Clinton. Devoid of any measurable accomplishments that have unambiguously advanced the interests of the United States and her people, Mrs. Clinton's stature as the frontrunner in the upcoming 2016 presidential contest and virtual shoo-in for the Democratic Party's nomination is predicated entirely on her status as a political celebrity. And those who are utterly objective recognize that this celebrity power that has catapulted Hillary Clinton to within striking distance of the presidency is totally derived from the brand name that comes with being the wife of Bill Clinton. It is simply inconceivable that Hillary Clinton would have embarked on her journey towards the presidency, which began with her election as Senator from New York in November 2000, if her surname had been anything other than Clinton.

No doubt, millions will discard objectivity and project their hopes for the future on the public persona of Hillary Clinton, as it will be carefully constructed by professional political strategists and public relations experts, all funded by the billion dollars plus that the Clinton brand will attract through its fundraising apparatus. Those who are more sober and reflective in their political judgments should consider the following three points I raise as reasons to be wary of a second Clinton presidency.

1. Hillary Clinton plays loose with the truth, and has a record that raises serious ethical questions. The examples I could cite are numerous, but one stands out, because it displays a level of public cynicism that is alarming in any politician. During her unsuccessful 2008 primary contest with then-Senator Barack Obama. Hillary Clinton sought to "prove" her physical courage by repeatedly claiming in a number of stump speeches that she had braved sniper fire in Tuzla during the war in Bosnia. As she stated on one occasion, "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

When news footage emerged clearly showing no sniper fire or even a whiff of threatening activity as Hillary Clinton emerged from her aircraft, it became clear that the aspiring presidential hopeful had flat-out fabricated the story of her heroism under fire out of whole cloth. Caught in a lie, Mrs. Clinton claimed that because she was fatigued from the rigors of a long campaign she had merely "misspoke." In my view, her oft-repeated epoch of contrived courage was too specific to be a case of misspeaking, but is a clear indication of Hillary Clinton's capacity for engaging in untruths as a matter of political expediency.

2. Hillary Clinton was a full partner with her husband in unethical conduct during the presidency of Bill Clinton. A prime example is what happened at the very end of the Clinton presidency, when a series of questionable presidential pardons were granted that were so outrageously incongruent, the whole episode came to be known as "Pardongate." Among the rogues gallery of pardon recipients courtesy of President Clinton were four convicted swindlers from the town of New Square in Rockland County, New York. The largely Hassidic community of New Square voted for Hillary Clinton in her 2000 senatorial campaign in overwhelming numbers, at the behest of community leaders. Shortly after her successful senate campaign, Hillary Clinton joined her husband for a private White House meeting with supporters of the convicted New Square swindlers.

Though she has never revealed what was discussed -- or promised -- during the closed door meeting, Hillary Clinton maintained that she had no prior knowledge of her husband's intentions on granting presidential pardons to the four swindlers from New Square. However, the feeling of disgust that arose in the wake of Pardongate became pervasive and non-partisan. Then a liberal columnist for the New York Times, Bob Herbert wrote in a column published on February 26, 2001:
You can't lead a nation if you are ashamed of the leadership of your party. The Clintons are a terminally unethical and vulgar couple, and they've betrayed everyone who has ever believed in them.

3. As a U.S. senator, Hillary Clinton became complicit in America's disastrous war in Iraq. The most important vote Hillary Clinton cast during her two terms as United States senator from New York was undoubtedly Senate Joint Resolution 45, which authorized President George W. Bush to unleash military force against Iraq at any time, without further consultation with Congress, let alone a declaration of war. The disastrous impact of that hideous example of strategic miscalculation is still with us, witnessed by the tectonic convulsions ripping the Arab world, and the rise of the Islamic State, which emerged out of the caldron created by the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

At the time of her vote in favor of instigating America's war in Iraq, Hillary Clinton boasted that her decision was based on "careful consideration." If this calamitous decision is the best that Hillary Clinton is capable of, that alone should raise serious questions about her suitability to serve as America's Commander-in-Chief.

During the 2002 vote on authorizing military force in Iraq, only one Republican senator had the courage and insight to vote against President Bush's rush to war. He was Senator Lincoln Chaffee of Rhode Island. Chaffee is now a Democrat, and is seriously considering challenging Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic Presidential nomination. This is what Lincoln Chaffee had to say to MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell about Hillary Clinton and why her vote in support of the Iraq war should preclude her from becoming the next U.S. President:
It's relevant to what we read about every day in the papers in the Middle East and other areas of the world. ISIS and what's happening in Nigeria and how we confront some of these extremist insurgencies... Even though it's a long time ago, back in 2002, the ramifications are still felt today.
In 2008, support of the Iraq war was the key ingredient that led to Hillary Clinton's defeat at the hands of Barack Obama. However, as 2016 approaches, collective amnesia clouds much of America's political landscape. Hillary Clinton's vote in support of a calamitous military adventure, along with past ethical indiscretions by both she and Bill Clinton, are largely discounted by large sections of the voting public, who now view the Clintons with benign nostalgia.

If this force of celebrity star-power and selective memory proves impervious to objective scrutiny and enlightened skepticism, than Hillary Clinton may very well win the next presidential election. In that case, the loser will be America, condemned to repeat the antics and machinations from a political pair that Bob Herbert rightly characterized as a "terminally unethical and vulgar couple."

Exercising Your 1st Amendment Right Now Can Get You Fired!

I not only find it absolutely ridiculous that a man was basically fired from his job for posting an open letter speaking truth about Islam, but also see this as the beginning of the end of American morals and values and the beginning of Muslim take over and extinguation of America itself! Sharia Law won't be far behind if we don't stop this now!

President Barack Obama has, on numerous occasions, made remarks promoting the Islamic faith, and attempted to play up the notion that Islam has played a vital role in the history of America.
Of course, there has been massive push-back against Obama’s comments, as Muslims played little role in the founding of America, or it’s initial greatness, other than providing the impetus for the formation of the Marines and America’s first war on foreign soil, against the Muslim Barbary Pirates.
Since Obama initially made these types of comments about Muslims in America back during a 2009 speech in Cairo, there has been something of an “open letter” making the rounds on the Internet, rebutting Obama’s statements with a list of facts he just doesn’t want to hear.
Recently, a high school lacrosse coach named Scott Lees was forced to resign his position at the Fryeburg Academy in New Hampshire, simply for sharing the nearly six-year-old open letter on his Facebook page.
“I just thought it was an interesting article,” Lees said, noting that none of his students interacted with the post.  “It’s not like it went viral,” he explained. “It’s not like everyone and their brother saw it.”
According to Western Journalism, Lees was informed by the school that he would be terminated from his position.  Instead, he offered his resignation, in order to keep the potential dismissal from following him on his quest for another job.
Here is the open letter that essentially got this coach fired from his job:
“Dear Mr. Obama:
“Have you ever seen a Muslim hospital?
“Have you heard a Muslim orchestra?
“Have you seen a Muslim band march in a parade?
“Have you witnessed a Muslim charity?
“Have you seen Muslims shak[ing] hands with Muslim Girl Scouts?
“Have you seen a Muslim Candy Striper?
“Have you seen a Muslim do anything that contributes positively to the American way of life????
“The answer is no, you have not. Just ask yourself WHY???
“Were those Muslims that were in America when the Pilgrims first landed? Funny, I thought they were Native American Indians.
“Were those Muslims that celebrated the first Thanksgiving day? Sorry again, those were Pilgrims and Native American Indians.
“Can you show me one Muslim signature on the United States Constitution? Declaration of Independence? Bill of Rights? Didn’t think so.
“Did Muslims fight for this country’s freedom from England? No.
“Did Muslims fight during the Civil War to free the slaves in America? No, they did not. In fact, Muslims to this day are still the largest traffickers in human slavery. Your own half-brother, a devout Muslim, still advocates slavery himself, even though Muslims of Arabic descent refer to black Muslims as “pug nosed slaves.” Says a lot of what the Muslim world really thinks of your family’s “rich Islamic heritage,” doesn’t it Mr. Obama?
“Where were Muslims during the Civil Rights era of this country? Not present. There are no pictures or media accounts of Muslims walking side by side with Martin Luther King, Jr. or helping to advance the cause of Civil Rights.
“Where were Muslims during this country’s Woman’s Suffrage era? Again, not present. In fact, devout Muslims demand that women are subservient to men in the Islamic culture. So much so, that often they are beaten for not wearing the ‘hajib’ or for talking to a man who is not a direct family member or their husband. Yep, the Muslims are all for women’s rights, aren’t they?
“Where were Muslims during World War II? They were aligned with Adolf Hitler. The Muslim grand mufti himself met with Adolf Hitler, reviewed the troops and accepted support from the Nazis in killing Jews.
“Finally, Mr. Obama, where were Muslims on Sept. 11th, 2001? If they weren’t flying planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people on our own soil, they were rejoicing in the Middle East.
“No one can dispute the pictures shown from all parts of the Muslim world celebrating on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and other cable news networks that day. Strangely, the very “moderate” Muslims who’s asses you bent over backwards to kiss in Cairo, Egypt on June 4th were stone cold silent post 9-11. To many Americans, their silence has meant approval for the acts of that day.
“And THAT, Mr. Obama, is the “rich heritage” Muslims have here in America…
“Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot to mention the Barbary Pirates. They were Muslims.
“And now we can add November 5, 2009 – the slaughter of American soldiers at Fort Hood by a Muslim major, a doctor and a psychiatrist, who was supposed to be counseling soldiers returning from battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“That, Mr. Obama is the “Muslim heritage” in America!
“P.S. Now, you can add the Boston Marathon bombings, too…”

"Islam is not a religion of peace”: Ayaan Hirsi Ali

This writer has, with great concern, written many times about the mis-belief most Americans, to include Obama, have regarding Islam being a religion of peace. And that those who are committing gruesome acts under the banner of Islam and Allah are just terrorists and extremists and are not connected to "true Islamic faith and beliefs", which are peaceful. This is only propaganda that is being forced fed to us Westerners that really have NO idea about what the Islamic faith is about nor what they are truly taught from their "Holy Quran" which teaches them hate and disdain for ANYTHING not Islamic/Muslim!

Now, I'm not one who will be bullied into silence about any issue and will discuss what ever I feel needs discussing, as I do exercise my 1st Amendment right to do so! And I really find it quite interesting that those who believe that those who support Islam can say whatever they want in defense or promotion of Islam, but when others, like myself and the women of whom this post is about, speak up to show the inconsistencies and down right LIES that supporters of Islam tell everyone so that they can continue in their plan given to them by a so called prophet through his words in their holy book to world domination and extinction of the infedels, are nothing more than Islamophobics and accused of hate speech! Since when is having a well informed and educational debate and having an opposing view of what is being held out as truthful facts about a subject (to include a religious one) called hate speech?

This world has become over tipped to the extreme side of "political correctness" and "religious freedom" to the point that unless EVERY ONE will BLINDLY accept what is being forced fed them, without questions or any explanations other than it is called a peaceful religion by those who have an agenda for all to believe it is so, then those who would dare question and say that this isn't so are discredited, called haters and ignorant of the true facts and are to be silenced, even at the threat of death (as in Ayaan's case). I'd like to ask this: if you are so correct and others like me are so wrong, then what is the harm in debating the issues? Where is the harm in answering questions? Why is there any harm in proving my assertions incorrect in a live debate? If I am wrong, then it should be very easy to prove it and it would benefit you to do so, in a public debate! Stop hiding behind the "it would be discriminating against us to even talk about it, it is our faith after all" reason, as that isn't a true reason because every other faith has answered to debate and has survived, so why can't Islam?

The TRUE reason why debate is being shut down in the case of Islam is because the actual, undeniable truth would be revealed and their violent beliefs and actions towards anything not of Islam are given and taught straight from their Holy Quran and their so called prophet, that's why! And this cannot be revealed as of yet because they are not quite in the position to overthrow America, or other countries for world domination, at this point in time.

Please read what Ayaan Hirsi Ali has to say. Please read it carefully. Then ASK questions. Educate yourself as to the trueness of Islam and the foundations upon which it is built. And then ask, why CAN'T we have a debate on this and have these discrepancies between what they are saying and being shown to us publicly and what is actually being taught to them and what is in their holy book and they ACTUALLY believe? The answer is: if they have nothing to hide, then there is absolutely NO reason as to why a debate can't happen!

Islam is not a religion of peace”: Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains why Western liberals need to speak up -- and why Islam needs a reformation now

"Islam is not a religion of peace": Ayaan Hirsi Ali

On ______, a group of ______ heavily armed, black-clad men burst into a ______ in ______, opening fire and killing a total of ______ people.
The attackers were filmed shouting “Allahu akbar!”
Speaking at a press conference, President ______ said: “We condemn this criminal act by extremists. Their attempt to justify their violent acts in the name of a religion of peace will not, however, succeed. We also condemn with equal force those who would use this atrocity as a pretext for Islamophobic hate crimes.”
As I revised the introduction to this book, four months before its publication, I could of course have written something more specific, like this:
On January 7, 2015, two heavily armed, black-clad attackers burst into the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, opening fire and killing a total of ten people. The attackers were filmed shouting “Allahu akbar!”
But, on reflection, there seemed little reason to pick Paris. Just a few weeks earlier I could equally as well have written this:
In December 2014, a group of nine heavily armed, black-clad men burst into a school in Peshawar, opening fire and killing a total of 145 people.
Indeed, I could have written a similar sentence about any number of events, from Ottawa, Canada, to Sydney, Australia, to Baga, Nigeria. So instead I decided to leave the place blank and the number of killers and victims blank, too. You, the reader, can simply fill them in with the latest case that happens to be in the news. Or, if you prefer a more historical example, you can try this:
In September 2001, a group of 19 Islamic terrorists flew hijacked planes into buildings in New York and Washington, D.C., killing 2,996 people.
For more than thirteen years now, I have been making a simple argument in response to such acts of terrorism. My argument is that it is foolish to insist, as our leaders habitually do, that the violent acts of radical Islamists can be divorced from the religious ideals that inspire them. Instead we must acknowledge that they are driven by a political ideology, an ideology embedded in Islam itself, in the holy book of  the Qur’an as well as the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad contained in the hadith.
Let me make my point in the simplest possible terms: Islam is not a religion of peace.

For expressing the idea that Islamic violence is rooted not in social, economic, or political conditions—or even in theological error—but rather in the foundational texts of Islam itself, I have been denounced as a bigot and an “Islamophobe.” I have been silenced, shunned, and shamed. In effect, I have been deemed to be a heretic, not just by Muslims—for whom I am already an apostate—but by some Western liberals as well, whose multicultural sensibilities are offended by such “insensitive” pronouncements.

My uncompromising statements on this topic have incited such vehement denunciations that one would think I had committed an act of violence myself. For today, it seems, speaking the truth about Islam is a crime. “Hate speech” is the modern term for heresy. And in the present atmosphere, anything that makes Muslims feel uncomfortable is branded as “hate.”

In these pages, it is my intention to make many people—not only Muslims but also Western apologists for Islam—uncomfortable. I am not going to do this by drawing cartoons. Rather, I intend to challenge centuries of religious orthodoxy with ideas and arguments that I am certain will be denounced as heretical. My argument is for nothing less than a Muslim Reformation. Without fundamental alterations to some of Islam’s core concepts, I believe, we shall not solve the burning and increasingly global problem of political violence carried out in the name of religion. I intend to speak freely, in the hope that others will debate equally freely with me on what needs to change in Islamic doctrine, rather than seeking to stifle discussion.

Let me illustrate with an anecdote why I believe this book is necessary.
In September 2013, I was flattered to be called by the then president of Brandeis University, Frederick Lawrence, and offered an honorary degree in social justice, to be conferred at the university’s commencement ceremony in May 2014. All seemed well until six months later, when I received another phone call from President Lawrence, this time to inform me that Brandeis was revoking my invitation. I was stunned. I soon learned that an online petition, organized initially by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and located at the website change.org, had been circulated by some students and faculty who were offended by my selection.
Accusing me of “hate speech,” the change.org petition began by saying that it had “come as a shock to our community due to her extreme Islamophobic beliefs, that Ayaan Hirsi Ali would be receiving an Honorary Degree in Social Justice this year. The selection of Hirsi Ali to receive an honorary degree is a blatant and callous disregard by the administration of not only the Muslim students, but of any student who has experienced pure hate speech. It is a direct violation of Brandeis University’s own moral code as well as the rights of Brandeis students.” In closing, the petitioners asked: “How can an Administration of a University that prides itself on social justice and acceptance of all make a decision that targets and disrespects it’s [sic] own students?” My nomination to receive an honorary degree was “hurtful to the Muslim students and the Brandeis community who stand for social justice.”
No fewer than eighty-seven members of the Brandeis faculty had also written to express their “shock and dismay” at a few brief snippets of my public statements, mostly drawn from interviews I had given seven years before. I was, they said, a “divisive individual.” In particular, I was guilty of suggesting that:
violence toward girls and women is particular to Islam or the Two-Thirds World, thereby obscuring such violence in our midst among non-Muslims, including on our own campus [and] . . . the hard work on the ground by committed Muslim feminist and other progressive Muslim activists and scholars, who find support for gender and other equality within the Muslim tradition and are effective at achieving it.
On scrolling down the list of faculty signatories, I was struck by the strange bedfellows I had inadvertently brought together. Professors of “Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies” lining up with CAIR, an organization subsequently blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the United Arab Emirates? An authority on “Queer/Feminist Narrative Theory” siding with the openly homophobic Islamists?
It is quite true that in February 2007, when I still resided in Holland, I told the London Evening Standard: “Violence is inherent in Islam.” This was one of three brief, selectively edited quotations to which the Brandeis faculty took exception. What they omitted to mention in their letter was that, less than three years before, my collaborator on a short documentary film, Theo van Gogh, had been murdered in the street in Amsterdam by a young man of Moroccan parentage named Mohammed Bouyeri. First he shot Theo eight times with a handgun. Then he shot him again as Theo, still clinging to life, pleaded for mercy. Then he cut his throat and attempted to decapitate him with a large knife. Finally, using a smaller knife, he stuck a long note to Theo’s body.
I wonder how many of my campus critics have read this letter, which was structured in the style of a fatwa, or religious verdict. It began, “In the name of Allah—the Beneficent—the Merciful” and included, along with numerous quotations from the Qur’an, an explicit threat on my life:
My Rabb [master] give us death to give us happiness with martyrdom. Allahumma Amen [Oh, Allah, please accept]. Mrs. Hirshi [sic] Ali and the rest of you extremist unbelievers. Islam has withstood many enemies and persecutions throughout History. . . . AYAAN HIRSI ALI YOU WILL SELF-DESTRUCT ON ISLAM!
On and on it went in the same ranting vein. “Islam will be victorious through the blood of the martyrs. They will spread its light in every dark corner of this earth and it will drive evil with the sword if necessary back into its dark hole. . . . There will be no mercy shown to the purveyors of injustice, only the sword will be lifted against them. No discussions, no demonstrations, no petitions.” The note also included this passage, copied directly from the Qur’an: “Be warned that the death that you are trying to prevent will surely find you, afterwards you will be taken back to the All Knowing and He will tell you what you attempted to do” (62:8).
Perhaps those who have risen to the rarefied heights of the Brandeis faculty can devise a way of arguing that no connection exists between Bouyeri’s actions and Islam. I can certainly remember Dutch academics claiming that, behind his religious language, Bouyeri’s real motivation in wanting to kill me was socioeconomic deprivation or postmodern alienation. To me, however, when a murderer quotes the Qur’an in justification of his crime, we should at least discuss the possibility that he means what he says.
Now, when I assert that Islam is not a religion of peace I do not mean that Islamic belief makes Muslims naturally violent. This is manifestly not the case: there are many millions of peaceful Muslims in the world. What I do say is that the call to violence and the justification for it are explicitly stated in the sacred texts of Islam. Moreover, this theologically sanctioned violence is there to be activated by any number of offenses, including but not limited to apostasy, adultery, blasphemy, and even something as vague as threats to family honor or to the honor of Islam itself.
Yet from the moment I first began to argue that there was an unavoidable connection between the religion I was raised in and the violence of organizations such as Al-Qaeda and the self-styled Islamic State (henceforth IS, though others prefer the acronyms ISIS or ISIL), I have been subjected to a sustained effort to silence my voice.
Death threats are obviously the most troubling form of intimidation. But there have also been other, less violent methods. Muslim organizations such as CAIR have tried to prevent me from speaking freely, particularly on university campuses. Some have argued that because I am not a scholar of Islamic religion, or even a practicing Muslim, I am not a competent authority on the subject. In other venues, select Muslims and Western liberals have accused me of “Islamophobia,” a word designed to be equated with anti-Semitism, homophobia, or other prejudices that Western societies have learned to abhor and condemn.
Why are these people impelled to try to silence me, to protest against my public appearances, to stigmatize my views and drive me off the stage with threats of violence and death? It is not because I am ignorant or ill-informed. On the contrary, my views on Islam are based on my knowledge and experience of being a Muslim, of living in Muslim societies—including Mecca itself, the very center of Islamic belief—and on my years of study of Islam as a practitioner, student, and teacher. The real explanation is clear. It is because they cannot actually refute what I am saying. And I am not alone. Shortly after the attack on Charlie Hebdo, Asra Nomani, a Muslim reformer, spoke out against what she calls the “honor brigade”—an organized international cabal hell-bent on silencing debate on Islam.
The shameful thing is that this campaign is effective in the West. Western liberals now seem to collude against critical thought and debate. I never cease to be amazed by the fact that non-Muslims who consider themselves liberals—including feminists and advocates of gay rights—are so readily persuaded by these crass means to take the Islamists’ side against Muslim and non-Muslim critics.
*
In the weeks and months that followed, Islam was repeatedly in the news—and not as a religion of peace. On April 14, six days after Brandeis’s disinvitation, the violent Islamist group Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in Nigeria. On May 15, in Sudan, a pregnant woman, Meriam Ibrahim, was sentenced to death for the crime of apostasy. On June 29, IS proclaimed its new caliphate in Iraq and Syria. On August 19, the American journalist James Foley was beheaded on video. On September 2, Steven Sotloff, also an American journalist, shared this fate. The man presiding over their executions was clearly identifiable as being British educated, one of between 3,000 and 4,500 European Union citizens who have become jihadists in Iraq and Syria. On September 26, a recent convert to Islam, Alton Nolen, beheaded his co-worker Colleen Hufford at a food-processing plant in Moore, Oklahoma. On October 22, another criminal turned Muslim convert, named Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, ran amok in the Canadian capital, Ottawa, fatally shooting Corporal Nathan Cirillo, who was on sentry duty. And so it has gone on ever since. On December 15, a cleric named Man Haron Monis took eighteen people hostage in a Sydney café; two died in the resulting shoot-out. Finally, just as I was finishing this book, the staff of the satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo were massacred in Paris. Masked and armed with AK-47 rifles, the Kouachi brothers forced their way into the offices of the magazine and killed the editor, Stéphane Charbonnier, along with nine other employees and a police officer. They killed another police officer in the street. Within hours, their associate Amedy Coulibaly killed four people, all of them Jewish, after seizing control of a kosher store in the east of the city.
In every case, the perpetrators used Islamic language or symbols as they carried out their crimes. To give a single example, during their attack on Charlie Hebdo, the Kouachis shouted “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) and “the Prophet is avenged.” They told a female member of the staff in the offices they would spare her “because you are a woman. We do not kill women. But think about what you are doing. What you are doing is bad. I spare you, and because I spare you, you will read the Qur’an.”
If I had needed fresh evidence that violence in the name of Islam was spreading not only across the Middle East and North Africa but also through Western Europe, across the Atlantic and beyond, here it was in lamentable abundance.
After Steven Sotloff’s decapitation, Vice President Joe Biden pledged to pursue his killers to the “gates of hell.” So outraged was President Barack Obama that he chose to reverse his policy of ending American military intervention in Iraq, ordering air strikes and deploying military personnel as part of an effort to “degrade and ultimately destroy the terrorist group known as ISIL.” But the president’s statement of September 10, 2014, is worth reading closely for its critical evasions and distortions:
Now let’s make two things clear: ISIL is not “Islamic.” No religion condones the killing of innocents. And the vast majority of ISIL’s victims have been Muslim. And ISIL is certainly not a state. . . . ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.
In short, Islamic State was neither a state nor Islamic. It was “evil.” Its members were “unique in their brutality.” The campaign against it was like an effort to eradicate “cancer.”
After the Charlie Hebdo massacre, the White House press secretary went to great lengths to distinguish between “the violent extremist messaging that ISIL and other extremist organizations are using to try to radicalize individuals around the globe” and a “peaceful religion.” The administration, he said, had “enjoyed significant success in enlisting leaders in the Muslim community . . . to be clear about what the tenets of Islam actually are.” The very phrase “radical Islam” was no longer to be uttered.
But what if this entire premise is wrong? For it is not just Al-Qaeda and IS that show the violent face of Islamic faith and practice. It is Pakistan, where any statement critical of the Prophet or Islam is labeled as blasphemy and punishable by death. It is Saudi Arabia, where churches and synagogues are outlawed, and where beheadings are a legitimate form of punishment, so much so that there was almost a beheading a day in August 2014. It is Iran, where stoning is an acceptable punishment and homosexuals are hanged for their “crime.” It is Brunei, where the sultan is reinstituting Islamic sharia law, again making homosexuality punishable by death.
We have now had almost a decade and a half of policies and pronouncements based on the assumption that terrorism or extremism can and must be differentiated from Islam. Again and again in the wake of terrorist attacks around the globe, Western leaders have hastened to declare that the problem has nothing to do with Islam itself. For Islam is a religion of peace.
These efforts are well meaning, but they arise from a misguided conviction, held by many Western liberals, that retaliation against Muslims is more to be feared than Islamist violence itself. Thus, those responsible for the 9/11 attacks were represented not as Muslims but as terrorists; we focused on their tactics rather than on the ideology that justified their horrific acts. In the process, we embraced those “moderate” Muslims who blandly told us Islam was a religion of peace and marginalized dissident Muslims who were attempting to pursue real reform.
Today, we are still trying to argue that the violence is the work of a lunatic fringe of extremists. We employ medical metaphors, trying to define the phenomenon as some kind of foreign body alien to the religious milieu in which it flourishes. And we make believe that there are extremists just as bad as the jihadists in our own midst. The president of the United States even went so far as to declare, in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in 2012: “The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam”—as opposed, presumably, to those who go around killing the slanderers.
Some people will doubtless complain that this book slanders Muhammad. But its aim is not to give gratuitous offense, but to show that this kind of approach wholly—not just partly, but wholly—misunderstands the problem of Islam in the twenty-first century. Indeed, this approach also misunderstands the nature and meaning of liberalism.
For the fundamental problem is that the majority of otherwise peaceful and law-abiding Muslims are unwilling to acknowledge, much less to repudiate, the theological warrant for intolerance and violence embedded in their own religious texts.
It simply will not do for Muslims to claim that their religion has been “hijacked” by extremists. The killers of IS and Boko Haram cite the same religious texts that every other Muslim in the world considers sacrosanct. And instead of letting them off the hook with bland clichés about Islam as a religion of peace, we in the West need to challenge and debate the very substance of Islamic thought and practice. We need to hold Islam accountable for the acts of its most violent adherents
and demand that it reform or disavow the key beliefs that are used to justify those acts.
At the same time, we need to stand up for our own principles as liberals. Specifically, we need to say to offended Western Muslims (and their liberal supporters) that it is not we who must accommodate their beliefs and sensitivities. Rather, it is they who must learn to live with our commitment to free speech.
